Isabel Gardener's first encounter with the injustices of our Judicial System occurred immediately after her former master (Ms. Mary Finch)'s death - though the late Ms. Finch's will had stipulated Gardener's freedom, the legal inadequacies at that time eventually led to Isabel's enslavement again. Her new masters were brutal and unforgiving, and she was even beaten several times, an obvious violation of child abuse laws. One of Isabel Gardener's chief goals is to punish perpetrators of child labor and abuse more severely.
During this time, one of Isabel's most frequent contacts was Curzon, who was in prison at the time. The horrid conditions of the complex in which Curzon was held greatly vexed her, and she would often send table scraps and other foods from her Master's household to the prison, as a means of keeping Curzon and his fellow inmates alive. Isabel Gardener has made improving the standard of living in U.S. prisons a top priority.
Isabel also witnessed how the British Government initially promised to all slaves who enlisted in their military, but then backpedaled, sending them to work in the mines of Canada ("Forced in the Louisbourg coal mines in Canada. They work and die under the ground. They never see the sun, and they'll never taste your freedom", pg. 166). To combat such corruption and misconduct, Isabel Gardener is advocating for more governmental transparency and fraud prevention.
